Choosing Sleep Without Work, and Choosing Peace by Letting Go of a Business Partnership
Afternoon Reflection
This afternoon, I would like to share a small experience with my readers that made me think deeply about the choices people make in life.
This morning, I went to a motorcycle repair shop near the entrance of the community where I live. I have two motorcycles. One is the motorcycle I currently use, while the other has a flat tire and is parked at home.
I called the wife of the motorcycle mechanic and told her that I needed help repairing my motorcycle. She went inside the workshop and woke her husband, who had been sleeping. A short while later, he came out to speak with me.
I explained that I wanted him to bring some of his tools with me so that he could replace the flat tire on my other motorcycle at my home in the community behind the shop. I also asked him how much he would charge for the service.
He replied that he could not go because he was busy.
I did not become angry with him. In fact, I believe that he has the right to choose how he wants to manage his time and work. Perhaps he was tired and needed to rest. Perhaps the job I was asking him to do did not fit his schedule. We cannot always know the real reasons behind another person’s choices.
However, this small experience reminded me of an important decision I once made in my own life.
In the past, I had a business partnership with an international partner. The partnership could provide work and income, but it also brought pressure and stress that I eventually felt unable to continue carrying.
In the end, I decided to leave that business partnership and choose to work independently. I also began giving more of my time to writing books and sharing meaningful ideas with readers.
I knew that this decision also meant giving up some income. However, I gained something that I considered more valuable than that income: peace of mind.
The story of the motorcycle mechanic and my own story are not completely different. He chose to rest, even though that meant giving up a particular job and the income that might have come from it. I chose to give up a business partnership and some income in order to protect my inner peace.
The lesson I learned is that every person has different values and priorities. For one person, income may be the most important thing. For another, time to rest, meaningful work, personal freedom, or peace of mind may be more valuable.
Life does not always ask us, “How much can you earn?” Sometimes it also asks, “How do you want to live?”
For me, living peacefully does not mean that I do not want to work or earn money. I still want to work, create useful things, and have a comfortable life. But I do not want to earn money by exchanging it for my inner peace.
Sometimes saying “No” to a job is actually saying “Yes” to our mental well-being.
And sometimes letting go of something we could have gained is the way we protect something that money can never buy.
