When Laziness Becomes a Teacher

Morning Reflection

Yesterday was a good day for me. I experienced many peaceful moments and was able to complete most of my daily activities. However, there was one small thing that I did not complete: my evening reflection.

I became a little lazy.

At first, I simply thought that I was tired and wanted to rest. I told myself that I could write the reflection another time. Eventually, the evening passed without me completing it.

This morning, however, I realized that even this small experience could become a valuable lesson.

It reminded me of a Buddhist teaching called Thīna–Middha (ថីនៈ–មិទ្ធៈ), commonly translated as sloth and torpor. Thīna refers to mental sluggishness or lack of energy, while Middha refers more particularly to drowsiness, heaviness, or dullness of body and mind. Together, they describe a state that can make the mind less energetic, less alert, and less willing to continue wholesome activities.

When I reflected on yesterday, I realized that laziness does not always appear as something dramatic. Sometimes it comes quietly.

It may sound like:

“I will do it later.”

“I am too tired today.”

“Tomorrow will be fine.”

There may be nothing obviously wrong with these thoughts, but when we repeatedly follow them without awareness, they can gradually become habits.

This does not mean that we should criticize ourselves whenever we become tired or need rest. Rest is also necessary. The important difference is whether we are consciously choosing to rest or whether the mind is simply following laziness without awareness.

Mindfulness allows us to recognize the difference.

Instead of saying, “I am lazy,” we can simply observe, “Laziness is present in my mind.”

Instead of becoming frustrated with ourselves, we can observe the feeling with patience.

When we can see a mental state clearly, we are no longer completely controlled by it.

Yesterday, I did not complete my evening reflection. I cannot change that now, and there is no reason to blame myself. But I can learn from it.

Perhaps this is another meaning of mindfulness: even when we lose awareness, we can become aware again.

Every day gives us another opportunity to begin again.

Today, I choose not to fight against myself. I simply recognize the tendency toward laziness and gently return to the path I have chosen.

My unfinished reflection from yesterday has therefore become today’s teacher.

It reminds me that inner peace does not require perfection.

It requires awareness.

And whenever we notice that the mind has wandered, become heavy, or lost its energy, we can gently wake it up and begin again.

🌿 Reflection

When laziness, drowsiness, or mental heaviness appears in my life, do I recognize it with mindfulness, or do I automatically follow it?

🌱 Daily Practice

Today, whenever I notice the thought, “I will do it later,” I will pause for a moment and observe my mind.

I will ask myself:

“Do I genuinely need to rest, or am I simply allowing laziness to guide my choice?”

Then I will make my decision consciously, without judgment and without unnecessary pressure.

🙏 Blessing

May I recognize sloth and torpor with wisdom and compassion.

May I have the energy to continue wholesome actions when they are needed, and the wisdom to rest when rest is truly necessary.

May mindfulness illuminate the moments when my mind becomes heavy or distracted.

May every mistake, unfinished task, and moment of weakness become an opportunity to understand myself more deeply.

May I learn to begin again without regret, walk forward without fear, and cultivate greater awareness, wisdom, and inner peace each day.

May I, my family, and all beings be safe, peaceful, happy, and free from suffering.
