Daily Dhamma: When Wrongdoing Seems Sweet “As long as the evil deed does not bear fruit, the fool thinks it is sweet; but when his evil deed does bear fruit, the fool suffers for it.” This teaching of the Buddha reminds us that the consequences of our actions do not always appear immediately. Sometimes an unwholesome action may seem attractive, profitable, or enjoyable in the beginning. Because we do not see an immediate consequence, we may mistakenly believe that what we have done is harmless. But the absence of an immediate consequence does not mean that there is no consequence. A person may lie and temporarily avoid a difficult situation. Another person may act selfishly and gain something they desire. Someone may speak harshly and feel satisfied because they have expressed their anger. Another person may act dishonestly and believe they have benefited because nobody discovered what they did. When the mind is controlled by passion, ill will, and unwholesome desires, we may create suffering not only for ourselves but also for the people around us. Passion can make us strongly attached to what we want. We may constantly seek pleasure, possessions, recognition, relationships, or experiences that satisfy our desires. Sometimes the mind travels into the past, sometimes into the future, and sometimes it becomes completely absorbed in something happening around us. Because the mind moves so quickly, we may not always notice where it is taking us. A small thought can become a long chain of thoughts. A simple disagreement can become anger.
