Allow the Past to Leave
Morning Reflection: Allow the Past to Leave
This morning, I began my daily routine a little earlier than usual. I started with one hour of Vipassana Meditation, followed by five minutes of Metta Bhavana, sharing loving-kindness with all beings. After meditation, I went swimming in the Mekong River, enjoying the quiet morning before returning home for breakfast, washing the dishes, and preparing to leave for the café.
Although my routine was peaceful, something unexpected happened during my morning swim.
While swimming in the Mekong River, several memories from my past suddenly appeared in my mind. They were not pleasant memories. They were old experiences that once caused me resentment and disappointment. I had not thought about them for a long time, yet today they returned as if they had been quietly waiting beneath the surface.
I noticed that these thoughts continued to influence me even after I left the river. They followed me home, stayed with me during breakfast, and remained present as I travelled to the café. Outwardly, everything seemed normal, but inwardly I knew my mind had not yet regained its usual stability.
When I arrived at the café, I greeted my friend as usual. He had already begun his work, but I simply sat quietly without opening my laptop. I wanted to observe what was happening inside rather than immediately distract myself with work.
After a while, my friend noticed and asked, “Why haven’t you taken out your laptop?”
I replied honestly, “I’m not feeling well inside today.”
He encouraged me to share what was happening, so I explained that many negative memories had resurfaced this morning.
His response was simple but deeply meaningful.
He said, “Let them come out. It is good. The more they come out, the less will remain inside.”
Those words immediately gave me a new perspective.
Instead of seeing these memories as an obstacle, I began to see them as part of the healing process.
My reflection this morning is that our past may revisit us many times throughout our lives. Old memories, painful emotions, and unresolved experiences may suddenly appear without invitation. We cannot always prevent them from arising.
However, we can choose how we respond.
If we react with anger, resentment, or attachment, we feed those emotions and give them new life. They remain within us and continue influencing our thoughts and actions.
But if we simply observe them with mindfulness—without resisting them and without feeding them—they gradually lose their strength and eventually fade away.
This reminds me of a medical examination of the intestines. Before a doctor can clearly examine the digestive system, the patient is given a cleansing solution that empties the stomach and intestines completely. Only when everything has come out can the doctor see clearly.
Our mind is very similar.
Sometimes old emotions must come to the surface before they can finally leave. If we observe them patiently without reacting, the mind gradually becomes lighter, cleaner, and clearer.
Perhaps true inner peace is not achieved by forcing the past to disappear, but by allowing it to arise, observing it with wisdom, and letting it pass away naturally.
🌿 Reflection Question
When painful memories arise, do you fight against them, or do you calmly observe them and allow them to pass without feeding them?
🌱 Today’s Practice
If an old memory visits your mind today, do not judge it or chase it away. Simply observe it as you would watch clouds passing across the sky. Notice your breathing, remain present, and gently remind yourself:
“This is only a passing mental state. I do not need to feed it.”
🙏 Blessing
May every painful memory that arises become an opportunity for healing rather than suffering. May awareness remain stronger than resentment, wisdom brighter than confusion, and compassion greater than anger. May your heart become lighter each day as you gently release the burdens of the past. May you walk forward with clarity, peace, and freedom, and may all beings be happy, peaceful, and free from suffering.
