The Missing Element: A Plan
Morning Reflection
This morning, I woke up a little later than my usual 4:00 a.m. routine. Before getting out of bed, I began the day with gratitude, as I have practiced over the past few mornings. I then continued with one hour of Vipassana Meditation, followed by five minutes of Metta Bhavana. Because I had started later than usual, I decided to skip my morning swim in the Mekong River. Instead, I prepared breakfast, washed the dishes, and left for the café a little earlier.
As I observed my mind throughout the morning, I noticed something encouraging. Unlike previous mornings when old memories or negative thoughts sometimes appeared soon after waking, today my mind remained calm and peaceful. This strengthened my confidence that beginning the day with gratitude is a powerful practice. Before the world has the opportunity to influence our thoughts, we can choose to prepare our own mind with appreciation and positivity.
When I arrived at the café, my friend was already sitting at our usual table, deeply focused on his work. We greeted each other warmly. Before beginning my own tasks, I paused for a few moments to settle my mind. When I tried to start a conversation, he smiled and politely told me that he needed to remain focused because he was afraid of losing the ideas that were flowing through his mind.
I understood immediately and quietly turned to my own work.
As always, I opened my notebook, reviewed my To Do List, and began completing each task one by one. Although a few small moments of frustration appeared during the morning, I noticed them quickly. Instead of following them, I simply observed them. Each time awareness arose, the frustration gradually faded away, allowing me to return peacefully to my work. Compared with the past, I could clearly see that my mind now returns to peace much faster.
Later, my friend asked me what stage I had reached in my writing. I told him that I was translating my daily reflections into Khmer for the Khmer edition of my book.
He smiled and said, “Your work seems to flow very smoothly, but mine never does.”
His comment reminded me of something I had already written in Chapter 22 of The Elements of Nature—The Five Elements of the Journey: Goal, Vision, Mission, Plan, and Action.
As we continued talking, I realized that my friend already possesses four of these five elements. He has a clear goal, a meaningful vision, a strong mission, and he works very hard every day. However, he often tells me that he writes without a clear plan. Because of that, he frequently changes his ideas, rewrites the same work many times, and sometimes becomes frustrated because he feels as though he is starting over again and again.
This reminded me that action alone is not always enough.
A clear plan provides direction.
Without a plan, even great effort may become scattered.
With a plan, each small action builds naturally upon the previous one, making progress smoother, more meaningful, and less stressful.
Nature teaches the same principle. A tree grows according to an orderly process. A river follows its course toward the sea. Nothing in nature grows through confusion.
Perhaps our own lives become more peaceful when we also learn to move forward with clarity, purpose, and a well-considered plan.
🌿 Reflection
As I pursue my own goals, have I prepared a clear plan to guide my daily actions, or am I relying only on effort and hoping everything will somehow work out?
🌱 Today’s Practice
Choose one important goal that you are currently working toward.
Take ten quiet minutes to write a simple plan consisting of the next three practical steps you need to take. Then focus only on completing the first step today. Let planning create clarity, and let steady action create progress.
🙏 Blessing
May your goals be guided by wisdom, your vision inspired by compassion, and your mission filled with purpose.
May you have the patience to prepare carefully before acting, and the discipline to follow your plan with perseverance.
May each step you take bring greater clarity, deeper peace, and lasting fulfillment.
May you, your family, and all beings be safe, healthy, peaceful, and filled with loving-kindness.
