The Blessings of Respect and Honour

Daily Dhamma: The Blessings of Respect and Honour

“For one who always respects and honours those who are older and more virtuous, four benefits increase: longevity, beauty, happiness, and strength.”

This beautiful teaching of the Buddha reminds us that respect is not merely a social custom. It can become a wholesome quality of the mind and an important part of a meaningful life.

Respecting those who are older does not mean believing that every older person is automatically wise. Rather, it encourages us to recognize the value of experience, learning, and the contributions of those who have walked through life before us.

Likewise, honouring those who are virtuous means appreciating people who cultivate honesty, kindness, patience, wisdom, compassion, and good conduct.

When we sincerely respect good qualities in others, we also create the conditions to develop those qualities within ourselves.

The first benefit mentioned is longevity. This can be understood not only as living a long life, but also as living with greater care and wisdom. A respectful and considerate person may be less likely to create unnecessary conflict and harmful situations.

The second is beauty. True beauty is not only physical appearance. A peaceful face, gentle speech, humility, and kindness can make a person beautiful in a deeper way. The qualities of the mind eventually influence the way we carry ourselves.

The third is happiness. Respect reduces arrogance and creates healthier relationships. When we appreciate others rather than constantly competing with them, the mind can become lighter and more peaceful.

The fourth is strength. Strength is not only physical power. It also includes mental strength—the ability to remain patient, humble, compassionate, and steady when difficulties arise.

Respect also teaches us humility. We recognize that we do not know everything and that we can learn from others.

However, genuine respect does not mean blindly following someone. Wisdom allows us to respect people while still examining their actions and teachings carefully.

Perhaps the deeper lesson is that what we repeatedly honour, we gradually cultivate within ourselves.

If we honour wisdom, we become more interested in wisdom.

If we honour kindness, kindness becomes more natural.

If we honour virtue, we become more careful about our own conduct.

Therefore, let us respect our elders, honour those who live virtuously, and appreciate the good qualities we encounter in others.

In doing so, we may discover that respect does not diminish us. Instead, it helps the mind become more humble, peaceful, strong, and wise.
