Beginning the Day with Gratitude
Morning Reflection
This morning, I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and began my daily routine as usual. I practiced one hour of Vipassana Meditation, followed by five minutes of Metta Bhavana, sharing loving-kindness with all beings. Every morning has become an opportunity to observe my mind and to understand it a little better than the day before.
Over the past few days, I noticed an interesting pattern. Soon after waking up, before my meditation even began, negative memories from the past often appeared in my mind. They would quietly visit me and sometimes influence the beginning of my day. Although I could observe them, I realized that if I simply allowed them to continue, they would take away the peace I wished to cultivate each morning.
Today, before those thoughts had the chance to grow, I decided to do something different.
As soon as I woke up, I gently reminded myself of the many things I am grateful for. Gratitude is usually something I practice throughout the day, but this morning I decided to bring it to the very beginning of my day.
I reflected on the gift of being alive, the opportunity to meditate, the health to swim in the Mekong River, my family, my work, my friends, my volunteers, and the opportunity to continue writing books that may benefit others.
Something beautiful happened.
Instead of allowing my attention to be captured by painful memories, my mind gradually turned toward appreciation. The negative thoughts did not disappear by force; rather, they simply became weaker because I chose not to feed them. Gratitude gave my mind a healthier place to rest.
This experience reminded me that the first thoughts we cultivate each morning often influence the direction of the entire day. Although we cannot always control which thoughts arise, we can choose which thoughts we continue to nourish.
My reflection this morning is simple.
If we begin our day with gratitude, we prepare our mind to see opportunities instead of obstacles, blessings instead of complaints, and hope instead of regret. Gratitude does not deny life’s difficulties, but it reminds us that even within challenges, there is always something worthy of appreciation.
Perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves each morning is not more time, more money, or more success—but a grateful heart.
Reflection Question
When you wake up each morning, what is the very first thought you choose to feed? Does it bring peace, or does it create unnecessary suffering?
Today’s Practice
Before getting out of bed tomorrow morning, pause for one minute. Take three slow, mindful breaths and silently name five things you are genuinely grateful for. Then carry that feeling of gratitude into the rest of your day.
Blessing
May every new morning begin with a grateful heart and a peaceful mind. May gratitude gently replace fear, appreciation overcome resentment, and wisdom guide your thoughts from the very first moment you awaken. May your day be filled with kindness, clarity, and compassion, and may you and all beings live in peace, happiness, and loving-kindness.
