Seek True Peace Before Seeking Your Future
🌿 Advice: Seek True Peace Before Seeking Your Future
Generally, when men and women reach adulthood and develop love and affection for one another, they often wish to build a family, have beloved children, and fulfill their responsibilities as parents. Parents have many responsibilities toward their children: providing care and protection, supporting their education, guiding them away from the four paths of harmful conduct—sexual misconduct, alcohol, gambling, and bad companionship—helping them establish their families when the time is right, and eventually sharing whatever inheritance they are able to leave for their children.
At school, teachers also play an important role in educating and preparing children for life. Students learn science, languages, mathematics, social studies, and many other subjects that help them develop knowledge and skills for their future careers and lives.
But there is an important question we should consider:
Is preparing children for their future enough if they have not yet learned how to find peace within themselves?
Today, meditation is also included in some educational activities in schools in Cambodia. This can provide a valuable opportunity for children and young people to become familiar with their own minds. However, if meditation is practiced only occasionally and students do not continue practicing at home, it may be difficult for them to develop it into a lasting daily habit.
As a father, I have observed that children may come to think of meditation simply as another activity required by their school if they do not understand its deeper value and how it can benefit their everyday lives. Therefore, the challenge is not meditation itself. The challenge is developing understanding and consistent personal practice.
Meditation and Vipassana can be methods that help people develop mindfulness, observe the mind, and understand their emotions and reactions more clearly. When we learn to observe the mind, we can gradually learn not to allow anger, fear, jealousy, or endless desires to control our lives blindly.
Material possessions, careers, education, social status, and worldly success all have value. However, everything external can change according to circumstances. Even when we possess many things, if our minds remain unsettled, we may still feel that something is missing. Therefore, seeking inner peace should go hand in hand with seeking progress and success in the outside world.
The advice I would like to offer to children and young people is:
“First, seek true peace within yourself through developing mindfulness and practicing meditation and Vipassana before you devote yourself entirely to seeking a successful and prosperous future in the outside world.”
Having a good career, a loving family, and a comfortable life is important. But learning to understand yourself and learning how to care for and guide your own mind are equally important.
To teachers, educators, and school leaders, I would like to offer an idea for consideration: where appropriate, schools could provide students with more opportunities to learn about and practice meditation regularly, together with education in mindfulness, ethical conduct, and self-understanding. Regular practice at home may also help students develop a wholesome habit, provided that it is taught with understanding and adapted appropriately to their age and circumstances.
Because true education is not only about preparing children to find a career and earn money in the future. It should also help them learn how to live peacefully with themselves, understand others, manage their emotions, and maintain inner peace.
Seek inner peace first. Then go forward to build the future you desire. When the mind is peaceful, no matter how many ups and downs we encounter along the journey of life, we can learn to meet them with calmness, mindfulness, and wisdom.
