Do Not Neglect Your Own Moral Benefit

Daily Dhamma: Do Not Neglect Your Own Moral Benefit

“For the sake of another’s benefit, however great it may be, do not neglect one’s own moral benefit.”

This teaching of the Buddha reminds us of an important balance between helping others and taking care of our own spiritual and moral development.

In life, many of us naturally want to help the people around us. We may sacrifice our time, energy, money, comfort, or opportunities for the sake of our family, friends, colleagues, or community. Helping others is a wholesome quality, especially when it is guided by compassion and wisdom.

However, the Buddha reminds us that helping others should not mean completely neglecting ourselves.

Our own moral benefit is also important.

What does this mean?

It means that while we are trying to support others, we should continue developing our own virtue, mindfulness, wisdom, compassion, and inner peace. We should not become so occupied with solving other people’s problems that we forget to examine our own thoughts, words, and actions.

Sometimes we may spend a great deal of time advising others about patience while we ourselves are becoming impatient.

We may encourage others to be honest while avoiding difficult truths in our own lives.

We may want others to control their anger while allowing anger to control us.

We may work hard to make other people happy while neglecting our own mental well-being and spiritual growth.

This teaching does not tell us to become selfish.

Rather, it teaches us to understand that genuine help begins with our own development.

If we want to guide others toward peace, we should also cultivate peace within ourselves.

If we want to encourage kindness, we should practice kindness.

If we want others to live wisely, we should continue developing wisdom in our own lives.

There is also an important difference between helping and carrying everything for someone else. We can support another person without taking responsibility for every decision they make. Sometimes the most beneficial help is to encourage someone to develop their own strength and understanding.

Our own life is also a responsibility.

We need time for reflection, meditation, learning, rest, and moral cultivation. These are not selfish activities. They help us become more capable of serving others with patience and wisdom.

Therefore, let us help others without abandoning ourselves.

Let us give without destroying our own well-being.

Let us support others while continuing to develop our own virtue.

Perhaps the deepest lesson is this:

We should not lose our own path while helping another person find theirs.

When our own mind becomes stronger in virtue and wisdom, our help to others can become more sincere, balanced, and beneficial.
