Hatred Is Never Appeased by Hatred

DHAMMA REFLECTION: Hatred Is Never Appeased by Hatred

“Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is a law eternal.”

This profound teaching reminds us of one of the most difficult truths about human life: responding to hatred with more hatred does not create peace. It only continues the cycle of suffering.

When someone hurts us, insults us, treats us unfairly, or acts with anger toward us, our natural reaction may be to become angry in return. We may think, “They hurt me, so they deserve to be hurt.” For a moment, responding with anger may make us feel stronger. But if we look carefully at the mind, we can see that anger does not actually remove the original suffering. Instead, it creates another source of suffering within ourselves.

Hatred is like a fire. If we answer fire with more fire, the flames do not disappear. They become larger.

The same principle applies to anger, resentment, revenge, and hostility. One angry word can produce another. One act of revenge can create another act of revenge. Eventually, nobody remembers where the conflict began, but both sides continue carrying pain.

The Buddha’s teaching does not mean that we should allow others to harm us or that we should never protect ourselves. Wisdom allows us to establish boundaries, leave harmful situations, speak firmly, and take appropriate action when necessary. But we can do these things without allowing hatred to control our minds.

Non-hatred does not mean weakness.

It means refusing to add more hatred to an already painful situation.

Sometimes the most powerful response is to remain calm.

Sometimes it is to remain silent rather than speak words that we will later regret.

Sometimes it is to forgive, not because what happened was acceptable, but because we do not want to carry resentment within our own hearts.

Through mindfulness, we can observe anger when it arises. We can notice the heat in the body, the thoughts in the mind, and the desire to react. Instead of immediately following that desire, we can pause and understand it.

Anger arises due to causes and conditions, and it can also pass away when we do not continue feeding it.

This is why the teaching is so powerful. It shifts our attention from changing another person’s hatred to understanding our own response.

We may not be able to control what others think or do.

But we can practice not becoming another source of hatred.

Peace begins when someone chooses not to continue the cycle.

Perhaps this is the meaning of the Buddha’s words: hatred cannot be ended by hatred. It is ended by non-hatred, understanding, compassion, and wisdom.

This is not merely an ancient teaching.

It remains a timeless law of human experience.

🌿 Reflection Question

When someone treats you with anger or hatred, can you protect yourself without allowing hatred to take root in your own heart?

🌱 Today’s Practice

When anger arises today, pause before responding. Take a few slow breaths and observe what is happening within your mind and body. Ask yourself:

“Will my response reduce suffering, or will it create more suffering?”

💚 A Blessing for Your Day

May you have the wisdom to recognize hatred when it arises.

May you have the strength to protect yourself without hatred.

May compassion replace resentment, understanding replace anger, and wisdom guide your actions.

May you become one more person who chooses not to continue the cycle of hatred, and may your peaceful response become a small cause for peace in the world.
