The Goodness of Virtue, Faith, Wisdom, and Harmlessness

Daily Dhamma: The Goodness of Virtue, Faith, Wisdom, and Harmlessness

“It is good to have virtue till old age, it is good to have unshakable faith, it is good to gain wisdom, it is good to do no evil.”

This simple teaching of the Buddha reminds us that some of the most valuable things in life are not material possessions, social status, or temporary success. The qualities that truly support a meaningful life are developed within the mind and expressed through our conduct.

To have virtue until old age means to continue protecting our actions throughout our lives. Virtue is not something that is important only when we are young. As we grow older, our experience gives us greater opportunities to understand the consequences of our choices. Honesty, kindness, patience, responsibility, and respect can become deeper qualities when we continue practicing them throughout our lives.

It is also good to have unshakable faith. In the Buddhist path, faith does not need to mean blind belief. It can mean confidence in the value of wholesome living, mindfulness, compassion, and the path of understanding. When difficulties arise, steady confidence can help us remain patient rather than abandoning what we know to be beneficial.

It is good to gain wisdom.

Wisdom is more than knowledge. We may know many things but still react foolishly if we do not understand our own minds. Wisdom allows us to see causes and conditions, understand impermanence, recognize the consequences of actions, and distinguish between what brings lasting peace and what creates unnecessary suffering.

Finally, it is good to do no evil.

Avoiding harmful actions does not mean becoming perfect. It means becoming increasingly careful about what we think, say, and do. Before acting, we can pause and ask: “Will this create suffering for myself or another person?”

As we grow older, perhaps the greatest achievement is not how much we have accumulated, but how much goodness we have cultivated.

May we grow old with virtue, remain steady in wholesome faith, deepen our wisdom, and keep our lives free from harmful actions.
