The Wisdom of Being Unshaken by Praise or Blame

Buddhist Teaching:  The Wisdom of Being Unshaken by Praise or Blame

“Even as a solid rock is unshaken by the wind, so are the wise unshaken by praise or blame.”

Human beings naturally enjoy being praised. When someone appreciates our work, recognizes our kindness, or speaks positively about us, the mind may become happy and excited. On the other hand, when someone criticizes, blames, or misunderstands us, the mind can easily become disturbed.

This simple teaching reminds us that true wisdom is not measured by how much praise we receive, but by how steadily we can remain when praise and blame come and go.

Imagine a strong mountain standing in the middle of a powerful wind. The wind may blow from one direction and then another, but the mountain does not follow the wind. It remains where it is.

In the same way, a wise mind does not allow every opinion of others to determine its inner state.

This does not mean that a wise person ignores criticism. Criticism can sometimes contain useful information. If someone points out a mistake, we can listen carefully, examine what was said, and correct ourselves when necessary.

But listening is different from becoming controlled by another person’s opinion.

Likewise, praise can be pleasant, but we do not need to become dependent upon it. If we constantly need recognition from others, our happiness becomes dependent upon circumstances that we cannot control.

People will sometimes praise us.

People will sometimes criticize us.

Some will understand us.

Others may misunderstand us.

Their opinions are constantly changing because people see life through their own experiences, expectations, and perspectives.

Therefore, we should learn to examine ourselves honestly.

Ask: “Am I acting according to what I understand to be right, beneficial, and compassionate, or am I simply trying to gain approval?”

When our actions are guided by wisdom and ethical understanding, praise does not make us arrogant and blame does not destroy our peace.

This is the strength of equanimity.

Like a solid rock, we can remain steady while the winds of public opinion move around us.

Through mindfulness and meditation, we gradually learn to observe pleasant and unpleasant feelings without immediately clinging to one or resisting the other. We begin to understand that praise and blame are temporary experiences.

The goal is not to become cold or indifferent.

The goal is to remain open, humble, and peaceful without allowing every external judgment to control the mind.

When we become less dependent on praise and less disturbed by blame, we gain a deeper freedom.

We can listen without losing ourselves.

We can learn without feeling defeated.

We can accept praise without becoming proud.

And we can receive criticism without hatred.

Perhaps this is what the teaching means by becoming unshaken: not that life stops moving around us, but that wisdom gives the mind a firm foundation from which to meet whatever comes.

🌿 Reflection Question

When someone praises or criticizes you, how much does their opinion influence your inner peace?

🌱 Today’s Practice

Today, when you receive praise, simply acknowledge it without becoming attached to it. When you receive criticism, listen calmly and ask whether there is something useful you can learn.

Then return your attention to your own actions, intentions, and values.

💚 A Blessing for Your Day

May your mind become steady like a solid rock.

May praise never make you arrogant, and may blame never destroy your peace.

May wisdom help you listen, learn, and improve without becoming controlled by the opinions of others.

May you develop the quiet strength to remain compassionate, humble, and peaceful through every changing wind of life.
